The Jorvik Creative Writing Group is a community of writers who provide supportive feedback and critique of our works in progress, and develop our writing skills together.

Originally based in York, UK, we moved online in 2020 and now have members from all over the UK (and some international). We welcome creative writers of all levels of experience, based anywhere, who write in English. Current member projects include novels, short stories, flash fiction, and poetry.

Some of our members have been with the group since we launched in 2019, but we always welcome new members to bring fresh insights and ideas, as well as bringing their own works for feedback.

You can expect:

  • Constructive feedback on your work in progress from fellow writers

  • The opportunity to workshop your writing with our community

  • Group exercises and discussions on different aspects of writing, led by community members

The group is volunteer-led and free to join.

How do the meetings work?

We meet every two weeks over Zoom, on Thursdays at 19:15 BST/GMT.

The main focus of our meetings is reading and critiquing members’ work that has been submitted in advance.

If we have time afterwards, we will run a short informal workshop exercise to help us develop our skills, tackle our blocks and get (back) into writing, or have some quiet writing time together.

Each meeting is informally chaired by the host. We use the “hands up” feature on Zoom to make sure everyone gets a chance to speak, or you can add thoughts to the meeting’s text chat. Everyone is welcome to contribute.

We are a small hobbyist group, but we try to make our meetings as accessible as possible.
